"Funky French Blends"
'06 Château
de Lascaux Blanc $13
50% Rolle, 25% Roussanne, 25% Marsanne Rolle - also
known as Vermentino. For a long time this grape was
used as a filler, there are producers now able to make
quite exciting wines from this variety. This example
shows elements of that renaissance - spiced apples,
gingerbread and fresh, exotic fruit.
'06 Château Saint Martin de la Garrigue Blanc
$10
Fresh, medium-bodied, seems richer and more complex
on the palate than the nose. With melon and delicate
citrus and a hint of beeswax over tart acidity.
'07 CORAIL Rosé Côtes de Provence Château
de Roquefort $15
Wild strawberry, pink grapefruit and honeysuckle aromas
are brightened by dusty minerals and white pepper. Firm
citrus and red fruit flavors leave a juicy impression
in their wake.
'07 Château Virgile Costières de Nîmes
Rosé $13
Aromas of strawberry and cherry dominate the nose with
strawberry and raspberry flavors that linger on the
palate. This rosé, served
chilled, is perfect for food pairings that demand more
than a white, but might be overwhelmed by a red.
'06 Le Pigeoulet en Provence $13
Le Pig is fresh, fruity, rich and elegant, with dominant
aromas of liquorice, black fruit and garrigue herbs,
it makes a good match for very simple as well as more
complex dishes.
'05 Montpezat Palombières $12
Bold flavors of blackberries, pepper and spice, with
hints of toast and earth, this big wine is complete
and expressive, with complex structured flavors.
Cheese
St André
$14.49/lb
St. André is a soft, ripened cheese in the tradition
of Brie and Camembert. St. André is made from
cow's milk and enriched with pure cream. St. André
is also fairly rare. Containing no less than 75% butterfat
for every 100 grams of cheese, St. André is commonly
agreed to be 50% richer than the average Camembert.
This cheese is a favorite for cheese boards!
President Madrigal Swiss $8.99/lb
French. Light, yet rich and creamy, a pasteurized cow's
milk cheese, it is characterized by a chestnut-like
sweetness that will stand up to any Swiss you've had
in the past.
Morbier $10.49/lb
An unpasteurized semi-soft cows' milk cheese of France
named after the small village of Morbier in Franche-Comté.
It is ivory colored, soft and slightly elastic, and
is immediately recognizable by the black layer of tasteless
ash separating it horizontally in the middle. It has
a rind that is yellowish, moist, and leathery. It's
flavor and scent intensify as it ages.
Black River Blue $6.49/lb
North Hendren Co-op Dairy, located about two miles north
of Willard, Wisconsin, has been in the cheese business
since 1923. In 2001 the North Hendren Co-op decided
to go into a niche market and manufacture Premium Blue
Vein Cheeses, including Blue Cheese & Gorgonzola
Cheese. The dairy is a small local nonprofit cooperative
with the dairy farmers as owners.
